FINAL STATEMENT OF INTENT

MUSIC VIDEO

The concept of my music video is centred around being happy and free as a way of hiding ones true thoughts of social media and how hate comments can affect ones self, however their happiness outshines through it. The video is aimed at a demographic 16-25 of a socially conscious middle to upper class audience. It will feature a young man who is expressing his feelings for being silly and having fun, however in some scenes of the video it will show his ‘mask’ starts to unfold… As much as he wants to be happy all the time – these comments can get to him. The scene where he will fall into the river will show how he starts to break down and wants all the negativity to end. However he builds himself up again and will never let it get to him.

I will use the man as my main and only actor as I want the attention to be revolved around him as he will be the one ‘suffering’ with these hate comments. In some scenes the actor will use lip syncing to make a convincing performance of happiness and freedom, however the hate being hidden away. In each scene the man will be dressed in multiple stylish outfits inspired by famous rappers with baggy clothes, and the focus of my mis-en-scene will focus on the joys of being young and free being released into the world of nature where he can become isolated and doesn’t feel like he has to be anyone but himself. He will portray this throughout the video, however some of the nasty comments will come up as they will still be stuck in the back of his mind.

In my video there will be a constant them of colour from the glowstick skeletons to the colour from the natural lighting in the sky. I want to do a contrast between both lightings as I feel it will add more depth to the video as the skeleton figures will represent the deeper sides to the video as the man feels like he just wants to break down but the title and the message throughout the song makes him want to ‘FEEL GOOD’.

I chose the theme of freedom throughout my music video as it will appeal to the target audience and will encourage young adults not to worry about little things in life and just to feel young and happy. I hope that the target audience will understand the concept of my video and how people shouldn’t focus on the negative things in life, although it may start to chip away at them, they must focus on the bigger picture in life. This goes back to the scene that I’m going to film about how the negativity starts to get to the young man as he falls into the river however he builds himself back up again.

The genre set by the exam boards course work is ‘protest’ and ‘Feel Good Inc’ by Gorillaz is definitely a social protest song. My concept will fit into the core values of Warner Music Group due to the fact that it is creative. Creativeness and innovation is one of Warner Music Groups core values as they encourage the creativity and freedom of an artistic expression. I will include this in my video as I hope to make it stand out and be different from an average music video.

When deciding who to feature in my music video, I was trying to find actors that could play a convincing performance, lip sync and most importantly have a good feel for the song.

I will use performance in my music video as to suit the genre set, record company and the audience chosen by using lip syncing and a well-structured narrative.

I am also going to try to use many different types of angles and types of editing to make my video more interesting and unique. I hope that from the editing and using different camera techniques, my video will stand out to the target audience.

My overall message of my music video is that its hard to keep a happy mask on when someone is hurting inside due to online protesting. As much as they want to be string, the negativity starts to eat away at them. However besides all of this, they realise that however much they have been brought down, They can build themselves back up again and move on and be free.

WEBSITE

I plan on using a large amount of media language in order to show my understanding of the topics that we are learning. For my specific website, I chose to go for mostly black theme, with elements of colour ‘pop’ to emphasise my music video. My aesthetic of my video is very colourful however for my website I wanted to tone it down a bit. I will be using the major social media platforms – Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat in order to get people to watch my music video. The key to successful marketing is repetition and posting on all major platforms.

My website will be easy to use which will appeal to the audience that I am targeting (16-25). Teenagers want a website what it easy to navigate as well as the stereotypical teenager is lazy and just wants to be able to simply click on something to find what they are looking for. My website will be quite fun as well as simplistic as I wanted it to represent the song which is upbeat and fun, but I also want it to reflect Warner Music Group because it is simple and straight to the point, it will have all of the different concepts that I will use for research and all the different topics that I will need until the final product is created. The use of promotion and the website would help Warner music group financially because they would get more views and more people would buy the music. Visual elements will help the website because it will stop it from being dull and boring the use of images help draw people’s eyes to information.

My website will reflect Warner Music Group as it will be easy to access and find things, however it will also be filled with some bright colours to make it more exciting and interesting. I will also use promotion and marketing – in particular putting merchandise on the website to appeal to the audiences. This will hopefully attract more people as they website will be inviting. Something that appeals to audiences for production companies is adding music videos and snippets of upcoming work onto the website. This then attracts people and makes them intrigued in the specific topic.

Synergy is a very important factor in the media industry as it brings large amounts of money in and makes music videos more effective. I will create a logo for my website which will make it inviting and visually appealing for the audience. I will place my video in a bold area to make it stand out from everything else on the website. Also I want it to be very clear for the audience to see.

Having elements of colour pop will link to my music video as i have used a lot of natural lighting in my music video.

My logo could be used on other platforms to promote my website and it will give my viewers something to remember my website by. By making everything transparent it appeals to a larger audience and makes more sense to any socio-economic demographic

Task 1 – INTRODUCTION

Hello my name is Tilly Middelthon and I’m studying media studies at A-level. I am studying in the north of Scotland at Gordonstoun school.

I hope you enjoy..

Task 2 – STAR IMAGE

MADONNA

MADONNA - MEGAMIX - ULTIMIX by Madonna Live & Remix on SoundCloud - Hear the world's sounds

I chose to do Madonna as my Star Image as she has been in the industry for 40 years and I feel she has transitioned and gone through a lot in that major part of her life. This powerpoint that I have made shows her transition from ‘Lucky Star’ to ‘Hung up’.

Madonna’s first music video ‘Lucky Star’

Task 6 – MY CHOSEN ARTIST

For my music video, I chose to do ‘Feel good inc.’ by Gorillaz.

‘Feel good inc.’ is a song by a British band Gorillaz, featuring an American hip hop trio group De La Soul. There are four animated members of the group: Murdoc Niccals, 2-D, Noodle, Russel Hobbs. The song is the lead single of their album Demon Days and it was released on May 9th 2005. The genre of the song is alternative rock, hip hop and funk rock.

I chose to do this song because it has a special meaning to me. Its a very upbeat song which I wanted to have for my music video. However, it’s also quite weird as there are many sounds used in it and I feel that this quality makes it more interesting. I feel like with this song you can experiment in so many different ways, for example with lighting, props. etc, and just have fun !

Feel Good Inc. could refer to a massive corporate entity, in which the people in charge only think about materialistic things, like having a million women, or being the ruler of everybody else. However, they are so caught up inside their own tower, that they are completely miserable despite all of the things they have. Ironically, these same people seem to enjoy talking about how much they are enjoying life in an attempt to make themselves appear all the more powerful and superior.

Still, there are lines where the person(s) talking seem to look down upon the “lower” people in distaste, saying that their talentless, carefree nature is the cause of all of Feel Good Inc.’s misery and boredom: “They’ve just gotta go cuz’ they don’t know whack” and mentioning them being “damn-ass free” After that, the person talking goes on to talk about being in a “melancholy town that never smiles” and not being able to sleep.

This song is about the things people do in order to make themselves feel good. The song seems to focus on the darker side of pleasure like addictions and habits, but then the chorus comes in and it seems to say that you should stop thinking about what makes you feel good and try to love others to make them feel good.

Feel Good Incorporated represents the evil of consumerism. It’s an evil corporation in which you can’t get out of (like Hotel California) that earns money from pleasure. In Murdoc’s case, its sexual pleasure. And for 2D, it’s the pleasure of preforming his music. It’s run by the evil De La Soul, who does the rapping in the video. But 2D isnt as ignorant as Murdoc, and finds he’s done with being her. 2D drifts away and to the window, and begins to sing about how he realizes what Feel Good Inc. is doing to the city, it’s got everyone under it’s control.

I think Feel Good Inc. represents an idealized “perfect” world set upon us by powerful corporate and government people, whereas the windmill represents a new wave of thought that doesn’t rely on objects or social status for happiness and fulfillment. Some clues of this are in the chorus: “Windmill, windmill, for the land”.

10 Best Gorillaz Songs: Samma3a Music - Samma3a Tech

Task 7 – PAST VIDEOS BY GORILLAZ

first music video “Clint Eastwood”

Clint Eastwood is the fifth track on Gorillaz’ 2001 album “Gorillaz”, as well as the first proper Gorillaz single. The song is named after the actor of the same name due to its similarity to the theme music of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

At around the same time radio in Europe also went mad for the song. Slightly later in 2001 the song would also become a massive radio hit in the US and central and South America. Bigger than his previous smash, Song 2 (with Blur), this song remains Damon Albarn’s biggest hit.

music video released 14 June 2010

This is a song about falling back from disappointment and wasting time with a familiar vice, bad habit or addiction. Think video games, porn, drinking, smoking pot or some other pleasurable idle activity. “You” is getting his dose of dopamine (“me”) from some artificial amusement while knowing that it’s temporal.

“Up on Melancholy Hill, there’s a plastic tree” – artificial high in the face of disappointment
“You can’t get what you want, but you can get me” – easy pleasure to fall back on when you fail to achieve
“Just looking out on the day of another dream” – wasting time away in this fake, happy world
“cause you’re my medicine” – chemical happiness
“so call in the submarine” – reference to the Beatles “Yellow Submarine”: going about in an idyllic happy fantasy
“a manatee” – Manatee’s spend half their time sleeping: wasting time away

I can definitely relate to the thin veneer of temporal happiness this song portrays both lyrically and musically. It resonates with my experience with vices (addictions) such as video games or porn all while there was an undercurrent of melancholy in my life from unaddressed or unsolved problems in my life.

This is definitely a very different take from Feel Good Inc. on the themes of wasting time. The sensation portrayed by On Melancholy Hill is idle, almost blissful whereas Feel Good Inc. portrayed a more energetic, socially engaged waste.

“Dirty Harry” released 2005

There are many images and direct references in this song that lead me to believe it’s about the soldiers stuck in Iraq. “The poor people in the sun” are Iraqis,
“I’m a peace-loving decoy
Ready for retaliation ”

The troops are supposedly on a peace keeping mission.

“I change the whole occasion to a pine box six-under “

The soldiers are sent home in pine boxes.

“Your water’s from a bottle
Mine’s from a canteen “

We “Americans” live our lives here and have the luxury of drinking water from a bottle while the soldiers drink from canteens.

“At night I hear the shots
Ring so I’m a light sleeper
The cost of life,
It seems to get cheaper
Out in the desert
With my street sweeper
The war is over
So said the speaker with the flight suit on
Maybe to him I’m just a pawn
So he can advance “

This whole verse is pretty self-explanatory, a street sweeper is a shotgun with a short barrel for a wide spread i believe, it’s commonly used for “crowd control.

And i think the guy just wishes he could be happy again “remember when i used to dance”

This song basically sums up my feelings for the war, I hate the politicians, but i feel for the soldiers who had no choice but to follow orders.

Task 8 – THINGS TO CONSIDER

  1. LI G H T I N G

The lighting in this video is quite cold as there are a lot of cool blue and green tones which emphasises sadness and depression.

The lighting used in this video is ‘bisexual lighting’ which is a use of hot pink, purple and blue to represent bisexual characters. characters. It has been used in nightclubs as well as in studio lighting for film and television.

Many LGBT people have been sharing examples of TV programmes, films and music videos to highlight the development of so-called “bisexual lighting” – characterised by the simultaneous use of neon pink and blue light on screen

2. L I P S Y N C I N G

The only important thing is to move your lips and appear to be saying the same words at the exact same moment as the real singer of the song you’re covering. Lip syncingallows you to focus on your dancing or any other action you’re planning on doing in a video and reduces the need to perform a song perfectly.

Artists often lip-synch during strenuous dance numbers in both live and recorded performances, due to lung capacity being needed for physical activity (both at once would require incredibly trained lungs). In Carly Rae Jepsen’s video it shows the performance of Tom Hanks lip-syncing while performing his ‘day-to-day’ life routine.

3. C O N V I N C I N G P E R F O R M A N C E

Performance based music videos feature a solo artist or a band performing to the camera – In this case, Rita Ora. The aim is to focus on the artists and convey them in a particular way to the viewing audience.  This category includes the recording of live performance, with the aim of demonstrating an artistic talent that is not captured in the recording, such as capturing the energy and enthusiasm of live fans.

4. C A M E R A A N D E D I T I N G

In this video, they use quite a simple editing technique with the main location being at Brighton coast. They also use reverse, slow mo and fast speed a lot to go along with the beat at which they edit too, to make it effective.

Close ups were used throughout the video to show emotion of the face. As events are very emotional this is vital to representing feeling – which explains the plot of the video. Most of the shots are heavily focused on Chris Martin, drawing all the focus to his character in the music video. All of the shots are very stereotypical music video. This is because, combined with lip syncing, they illustrate meanings of the lyrics more to the audience, as well as continuing to establish the setting.

The editing in this video is very specific. The video was most notable for its distinctive reverse narrative. Chris Martin had to sing the song backwards for the music video, so learned the phonetic movements which made it look like he was singing the words, the singer set about the month long task of studying his lyrics and learning how perform them back to front

Task 9 – COPYRIGHT

Ace | Gorillaz Wiki | Fandom

“Feel Good Inc.” is a song by British virtual band Gorillaz, featuring American hip-hop group De La Soul. The song was released as the lead single from the band’s second studio album Demon Days on 9 May 2005. The single peaked at No. 2 in the United Kingdom and No. 14 in the United States and made the US Billboard year-end top songs chart in 2005 and 2006. It also topped Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart in the U.S. for eight consecutive weeks, a first for the band.

Task 10 – AUDIENCE MEMBER

The audience for my music video ‘Feel Good Inc’ will be aimed at a socially conscious, middle to upper class age group of 16-25. It should tempt both girls and boys as it is a video for both genders who are interested in social media/online protests. I have found an image on a person who represents what audience member I think will be attracted to my video.

Task 11 – KEY ELEMENTS

Task 12 – STATEMENT OF INTENT

I will use the man as my main and only actor as I want the attention to be revolved around him as he will be the one ‘suffering’ with these hate comments. However, in each scene the man will portray a different band member.

My logo could be used on other platforms to promote my website and it will give my viewers something to remember my website by. By making everything transparent it appeals to a larger audience and makes more sense to any socio-economic demographic

Task 13 – MOOD BOARD

Task 14 – NEW LOGO/BRAND FOR ARTIST

Below is the logo for my chosen artist. I chose this name as I think it is very fitting to the original band ‘Gorillaz’. I really wanted to keep the animal theme going, more specifically the primate theme as I think it is a major factor in the song. The bright sparks of colour in the logo amplifies the ongoing message of the song that it can be tough at times however they just need to keep on going. It also correlates to one of the scene in my video which will be to do with glow sticks, therefore I thought the colour goes well with it. The picture on the logo of the monkey doesn’t have a very pleasant facial expression and although the song is called ‘feel good inc’ people can feel severely against the meaning of it.

Task 16 – ORIGINAL IMAGES OF ARTIST

Below are some photos I took of the artist. These photos will appear on my website to add more depth and structure to it. These photos of the artist, THE MAGIC MONKEES represents Gorillaz as they are quite lay back and easy going. I took these photos all in the same place with mountainous backgrounds as it harmonises with my video, however it contradicts with Gorillaz’s video and it is set in a busy city, whereas mine is in a quite and isolated place.

Task 17 – STORYPLAN

SYNOPSIS

I will be making a music video to the song ‘feel good inc’ by Gorillaz in hope to portray the deeper meaning of the song. The video will have multiple scenes in it showing each part of the characters life – mostly all happy.

The video will begin with a man standing in the middle of an empty road in an isolated area which will be a good opening as the man won’t have any sort of facial expressions on his face – not giving anything away. This will hopefully make the viewers want to carry on with the video as it will be quite an intriguing opening. In harmony with the music video by Gorillaz, I hope to have similar lighting in the opening scene with it being quite mellow and plain however to have a pop of colour in either some of the background or the clothing the actor will wear.

Another scene will be skeleton like figures in a dark room with glow sticks as the frame of their body. This scene will show the idea of the dark side of social media and protesting and how it can eat away at people.

The skateboarding scene has a feel of being free and happy which is a big part of my video as I want to have two contrasting sides of freedom and happiness, but also want social media and bullying can do to someones health.

The main scene is where most of the lip syncing will occur. More importantly the chorus and rapping part of the video. This is also the scene where I will use a fish eye lens to illustrate the 2000s hip hop look bye the actor wearing baggy clothes and sunglasses.

In some parts of Gorillaz’s video it shows that people are trapped inside this tower. For my video I will be using the idea of feeling trapped and feeling like people don’t belong. This will be portrayed in each scene I make but more specifically the scene in the river when Freddie (the actor) will fall into the river as he has given up from feeling so trapped.

In All of the footage in the video is filmed on an iPhone. There is one scene where I use a fish-eye lens on the phone to create more of a 2000s boxy kind of look.

Task 18 – STORYBOARD

5 SECTIONS

  1. Isolated road (Norway)
  2. Isolated landscape area (Norway)
  3. Steading room – used for glow stick scene (Scotland)
  4. Icy clear river (Norway)
  5. Random road in countryside (Scotland)

Task 19 – PLAN SONG TITLE & LOGO OF THE ARTIST

Task 20 – FINAL ‘STATEMENT OF INTENT’

(insert)

Task 21 – SHOT LIST & SHOOTING SCRIPT

Task 22 – PLANNING OF LOCATION + SHOTS

The images below have all been taken by myself when I was filming the video. All of the phots have something in common which is isolation. Isolation is quite a big part of my video as it expresses the idea that the artist/actor wanted to feel happy, and although he did, I also didn’t have anyone around him to help with the severe issues he had going on, therefore I think each photo represents a part in it.

Task 23 – CASTING OF FILM + SHOTS

This is a photo of my only cast (besides my glow-stick band). This photo represents all three band members of the Magic Monkees as he appears in different scenes dressed as different characters in the band. I hope that my target audience will be able to feel connected to this single cast member in my music video with his multiple different roles.

Task 24 – PLANNING OF PROPS + COSTUMES

Below I have made a collection of the aesthetic of the props and costumes used in my video.

Task 26 – EVIDENCE OF PRODUCTION

Task 27 – ORIGINAL IMAGES FOR WEBSITE

These are my two favourite images that I will use in my website. I think that they will add a lot and link to my music video as the glow stick image was a scene that was shot in my video and the other on is of the artist.

Task 28 – ROUGH EDIT OF VIDEO

Task 30 – FINAL EDIT

Task 31 – RESEARCH & ANALYSIS FOR WEBSITE

The music artist Sia has a very uplifting website as she uses bright colours such as yellow as her homepage. On the other hand, her most recent song – ‘Courage to change’ in the news section has a completely different background colour and aesthetic as she clearly wants to stand out and be noticed as she is trying to promote it. The fonts used on the website are very child-like as her music is about having fun and being happy. This font follows throughout the whole website. Sia also doesn’t have many images, however the ones she does have are of Maddie Ziegler who is an actress/performer who has been working with Sia for years and is always appearing in her music videos. Sia also has a big merchandise store that allows her fans to buy things from jumpers to bags. All of these features make her website really stand out and having an easy set up also keeps fans more interested in it. This website inspired me due to the vibrant colours. In my website I want it to be simplistic like Sia’s but to also have some bright colours which I think matches my artist.

In contrast, Coldplay’s website is darker with the occasional pop of colour. On the store/ merchandise page, it has contrasted in the background colour from black to white. On thing that Coldplay has kept the same is their logo, which is a rainbow coloured font which stands out on every page. Similarly with Sia’s website, Coldplay has a menu, merchandise page, home page, music/videos page and a news page. This shows that it is quite common to include all of these factors in a website. A unique element in Coldplays website is that they include a timeline which shows from when they started as a band, to where they are now, including album covers and a brief synopsis about each album. This can really attract the fans/readers that view the website as it gives them more exclusive information about Coldplay throughout the years.

Task 32 – WEBPAGE MAP

Task 33 – KEY ELEMENTS IN WEBSITE

Below I have a checklist of what I want to include in my website. These elements in my website will range from the latest news which will include updates and info from the artist (tour dates etc), to behind the scenes of the shooting of the video and a exclusive vlog from the artist.

Task 34 – WEBSITE BUILDER

I wanted to use Wix as it is the easiest to use, its user-friendly and a great website building platform.
